We live in the South. Though it is hot & humid most of the year we do in fact have a winter! Occasionally, we get a little snow! Thankfully we don’t get buried in it yearly as do the folks in the Northern states. Although my husband was born and raised here in Alabama, he inherited a fondness for the Winter from his Wisconsin born dad. Then there is the whole hunting thing..
We normally don’t have to worry to much about the cold weather until around November. Even then it is not consistently chilly, but most likely no longer air conditioner weather. You would think that the a.c has been off for a few months at this point right? We live in the South remember! I had the air conditioner on just yesterday!
Sometime last year I found some of those ‘energy saving’ curtains on clearance. I bought all they had, which was only 4. I love them. They are currently on the living room windows because it’s the hottest room in the hot months and the coldest in the winter. We hung one over the hallway entrance and the laundry room entrance. Any thick material works nicely.
For our beds we like to have a modest amount of cover. We generally have flannel sheets and a comforter and a thinner blanket. The boys have individual blankets although they sleep together. That is another thing we do. Believe it or not they prefer to be together. When daddy checks on them before bed and on his way out for work he will throw a heavier blanket on them just for good measure.
Warm pajamas are a must! I recently went through our PJ collection to make sure everyone had some for this season. A good selection of warm socks and house shoes because our floors stay very cold.
We don’t have to much work to do to prepare pipes and plumbing for winter. Derek keeps an eye on the weather and if he thinks the weather will get terribly cold he might leave a faucet running. This in one are we are no so prepared in.
A collection of good soup and stew recipes will keep hungry bellies warm. Our favorites are vegetable soup and chili. I make a good beef stew as well. Oh, and spaghetti or pizza soup and taco soup are good ones! The winter months are a fine opportunity to do some baking. Hot bread fresh out of the oven will warm anyone and put a smile on their face. Ahh… Bread! We have been on a no carb diet. Maybe I should say trying to be no carb. But that’s another blog post!
Warmly,
Jennifer
P.S. Just so you know, it was 80° today.
