January’s Goals

*Take eggs to friend to incubate and hatch for us. Lord willing we will have some meat birds and laying hens.

*Prepare brooding area for chicks. Not keeping them inside this time.

*Plan Spring Garden

I decided to note Alabama’s seasonal produce for any local readers and for the curious using this chart.

Seasonal Produce This month:

The season for greens, herbs, pecans, strawberries, and sweet potatoes begins.

Around the Homestead 1/2/2010

Boy has my kitchen been busy and bloody.

Derek has killed 4 deer this season. I am so thankful for this meat. It will allow our very tight budget to go a little further. In addition to the savings, it is much more healthier for us. We can’t afford organic grass fed animals so we hunt and raise our own.

Canyon is growing up so fast. He is me made all over. Sometimes that finds him in trouble. He inherited my tenacity. He received a guitar for Christmas and has been blessing us with noise. Derek is teaching him a few chords. One of these day all the noise will pay off.

Trenten, my rambunctious one, has kept me busy. He is always up to something. We got him an isle for Christmas. Best money spent so far! He loves it.

Leland and Asher are 6 months old. They are beginning to learn to crawl and sit up. It is amazing how mobile they are. I wish you could catch one of those sweet moments when they are smiling at each other. It melts my heart every time. They are still nursing and are gaining interest in big people food.

I have been busy being keeper of my home. Thankfully, a mothers job is never done. I’d be really bored! I’m still waiting for the spring! I get a little down in the winter. I tend to bake more and that's a plus. But there is nothing like good 'ole sunshine in the spring time. I'll have to remember to can some this year!

Weeds

Without careful tending, they can sneak in and choke out your garden.

My life is a garden. The Lord is the life giving nutrients and water needed for growth and maturity. I am the soil. My marriage and children are tender crops planted in my garden.

If not carefully tended weeds will emerge and choke out my garden.

The funny thing about weeds is most of the time they look innocent and even resemble the very plants you planted.

I found a few weeds growing in my garden.

It’s time to start weeding.
